Day Four, Klickitat Street...

So what you may all know, or not know, is that the Beezus and Ramona books all take place on Klickitat street. For the last year or so the kids have been falling asleep at night to the audio books of Beezus and Ramona. For hours I hear the readers voice plotting through chapter after chapter telling of the simple lives of Beatrice and Ramona.
They have yet to grow tired of them.

We recently realized that the stories take place in Portland Oregon, and not only in a vague over all sort of way, the books take place on the real street called Klickitat street. Considering we are up here and the kids deep love for the books, we made the drive from one end of Klickitat to the other. My daughter took my phone and clicked picture after picture all along the way...

It was neat. Most of the houses were older, nicer homes. Nearing the end of Klickitat, the street made a quick climb up a hill and then met up with a large busy cross street. That was it. We saw Klickitat and now we can image what Beverly Cleary was imagining as she wrote about all of Ramona's adventures.

Hope you all are having a wonderful August!

Portland Day Three, and the Rose Garden...

On day three we visited Washington Park to see the rose garden there.
The aroma of roses wafted up to us as we got out of our car and only grew stronger
when walked down the steps into the garden. There were SO MANY ROSES!!!!
Of every color and size...
Each one smelling different...
And so extraordinarily wonderful…
I couldn't decide if I had a favorite...
They all smelled so good!
But you had to be careful to look out for bees hidden inside the petals…
But I think the ones labeled "Fragrant Cloud" were the best smelling...
And I do lean toward peachy-er colored roses...
But it wasn't just the roses, the grounds themselves were wonderful too…
We all had a wonderful time...

I never been somewhere that had so many roses blooming at one time...
Each one so perfectly a rose...
I know at some point I'll have to visit again...
Just to be there...

Portland, Day Two...

Day two was nearly, but no quite so completely packed as our first day.
The kids and I went to visit my increadibly wonderful friend Lauren...
We got to peek at her house which is deep in the hills of south east Portland...
She took us to the river there and the kids got to swim and play….
The houses across the way are floating houses that rise and sink with the water… So neat!
Later we went to Pier Park, which is not a pier, so I'm not sure why it's called that...
But the seesaws there were like from when I was a kid...
They had the most wonderful screech as they went up and down...
We all got on and it was tons of fun…
It was another wonderful day!!!

Portland, Official Day One...

We packed a lot into day one. First we had a wonderful breakfast with a couple of very good friends.
Followed by heading down to Hawthorn's street fair to meet up with yet another very
good friend and his daughter…
The madness of busy Hawthorn was enough to make anybodies head spin...
Eventually we came upon Voodoo Donut's pink truck, causing the kids to promptly ordered giant donuts in spite of their overly stuffed stomachs from breakfast…

Next we walked down to Sunny Side school/park where the kids had a chance to romp a bit…
And we were able to talk/hear each other instead of squeezing single file through Hawthorn's swarming throngs…
On our way to back to our car I snuck in a few clicks with my camera.
I love all the wonderful front yards and  houses that make up this area of Portland…

The hydrangeas were incredible…

Our next stop was Powell's Book. A bookstore so large it takes up a whole city block.
The kids were thrilled!!!!
Our evening wrapped up at Cathedral Park...
Where you could hear the rumbling of the cars skimming across the bridge…
And the kids had yet another chance for romping….
Finally the evening light grew dim as we stood on the parks mini dock...
 What a wonderful first day!!
