Today...

Was one of those rare gaps in time where it was only one of the kids and me…
My six-year-old and I spent from the early morning all the way to late afternoon just us.
It started a little earlier than I might have aimed for, but we had lovely tea… Twice!!!
The second time round we devoured giant cookies...
We stopped by a yard sale and found a couple of very perfect things...
Which opened the door to a large size project...
Including using up some perfectly purple corduroy...
This young man was quite the help I needed, and a bit of a photographer too…
 His photos were numerous...
And I always appreciate the unique prospective…
There was no time wasted in using the new addition…
And with the momentum going, it was quick to fix this other needy piece of furniture…
All in all, it was nice to spend some time with just one sweet kiddo, and realize how
smooth the time can be when it's just one relationship to cocoon in.

Happy Saturday to you all!!!

Little bits of the lots that happens...

Days are always so packed…
I have yet to learn not to try to fit more in than each day's fair share…
Most days I end up adjust my expectations…
I don't believe in races and yet I find myself racing…
I love all these things I want to do…
I just need about a thousand more pounds of muscle and a million more hours…
Or a wee bit more patients…

In the kitchen...

There has been a lot of cooking lately…
The kids have been on a cake baking spree… I think there were five cakes baked in two days...
I made baked macaroni and cheese with Parmesan, sharp cheddar and aged Gouda…
I can't wait to make it again...
We had a lunch of fresh sauteed ahi tuna made into salad, as well as egg salad with eggs from my parent's hens. We ate it with multi-grain bread just out of the oven and lettuce from the garden...
I think after a couple weeks of counter top building madness (that will be another post…)
finally having the kitchen back and finally having real surfaces that can so easily
be wiped clean, we are extremely happy to be in the kitchen...

Busy Times . . .

Oh my goodness, time has flown . . . And trickled slowly, but mostly flow . . .
I have been up to my ears in building cement counter tops . . .
Messy stuff when you don't quite know what you're doing . . .
I'll be done soon and then maybe I'll have a bit more time to dilly-dally in the world of blogs . . .

Keeping lists and remembering it all . . .

Tonight I read something in Mother Earth News that really rang true with me . . . It was an article about homesteaders arranged as a series of questions. Each homesteader answered their own way from their own experiences. One question was: What do you wish you'd known before you started? One participant answered that they wished they had kept a to-do notebook instead of just making lists. That way they could look back over all they had done, rather than just forever seeing what they hadn't. I like this because so often I forget where I started from – A ball of yarn, planks of wood, a stretch of fabric or just an idea. I forget that our house had a moldy rotten bathroom that could not be used and a kitchen that wasn't much better.
I forget about the termite infested shed that my husband and brother-in-law tore down and the many many fence postholes we dug first moment the place was ours. The sore necks and achy shoulders, the tired arms and worn out backs.
There is still so much to do, there always will be, but there is also so much done. Gardens beds have been built, weeds have been tackled, tables and benches have been constructed. Plants are now abundant and this house is no longer just a house it is a home.
I am definitely going to start to keep a to-do book.

I guess that a blog is another way of keeping it all remembered.

Things around here that make me take a breath and smile . . .

Making our own rain during this eighty-degree January spell . . .
Barefoot and leaping . . .
The mysterious flower I just found behind our house . . .
And the surprise violets that are blooming . . . So quietly elegant . . .
Fresh ingredients from the Sunday Market . . .
Multi grain bread that came out soooo good!!! I'll tell you more about that soon . . . Heavenly desserts . . .
My dear five-year-old listening with all his might . . .
And these boys getting so big I can only watch and try to assimilate . . .

Wabi-Sabi . . . Lately . . .

It feels like forever since I have been able to sit down and etch out a quick post. As wabi-sabi is such a capturing catch-all of the beauty of everyday, I thought I'd post some pictures from the last couple of weeks . . . The simple yet so deeply here in my house moments . . .
On the bedroom wall . . .
Over my dresser . . .
So used, so loved . . .
In the kitchen . . .
Rolling dough . . .
Sliced and ready . . .
Almost real looking crossants . . .
A last minute birthday card . . .
And lastly . . . The dedication of sour-grass as it pokes its bright yellow flowers
 up through the concret . . .
This is my wabi-sabi as of late, what is yours??

Hope everyone is well ~ Marica

Last night and the year to come . . .

Last night we celebrated with lasagna, salad, and homemade cracker twists . . .
We made drinks with fresh squeezed lemon, sparkling water and bourbon.
We tossed in frozen strawberries as ice cubes . . .Today I think about the things I want to finish this year, or at least keep working on . . .
I have so many projects . . . I need to start stamping some as closed . . .
All done . . .
No more work needed . . .
Somethings take their own time . . . Like the bamboo I am growing along the fence . . .
But others need me to be the fire to get them completed.

Happy New Year and Best Wishes to Everyone ~ Marica
