Bits of all that Christmas-ness...

This year I was very excited because we actually stopped,
in mid-motion of Christmas madness, to make gingerbread houses…
It was wonderful fun, although the walls kept caving in until we
became patient enough to just hold them in place while they dried a bit...
The whole process took some time, and loads and loads of disgusting candy...

But in the end, we all agreed they came out nice…

 And quite gingerbread-house-y…
Christmas morning was pleasant... The kids got a million books.
This guy wasted no time getting started reading...
We let them sneak a little of their chocolate Santas before breakfast...
Breakfast was a wonderful frittata. The following is a rough telling of how it went:

Christmas Frittata

In a large bowl wisk together:

8 eggs
4 egg yolks (I think this added to the overall effect)
4 cups milk
1+1/2 cups cheddar cheese grated
2 cups broccoli (Lightly steamed first then chopped small)
1 small onion minced
1 red bell pepper diced
1 pasilla pepper (Roasted over a flame on the stove
then the skin scrapped and the pepper diced)
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
Salt and black pepper

Poured into a buttered 11 x 13 baking dish.
Baked at 350 degrees until middle sets… I think about 30-35 minutes.

Later we went to Pier Park and all the boys played disc golf...
The weather was PERFECT!!!!
I love the weather up here…
The fluctuation makes me so appreciative of that golden sun…
Everyone had a great time...
Christmas evening we made a massive feast.
Yes, there was duck!! And lots of other things...

Saturday Morning...

Wonderful wonderful Saturdays...
Now that the kids are in school and I work a good part of the week,
Saturdays feel like celebrations in and of themselves…
A meandering breakfast that filters through the morning…

Not a big sit down shebang, just one or the other of us
flipping pancakes and eating them as they're ready...
Sitting by the window where morning light fills the room, or
on the heater covered in a blanket, chatting, still in pajamas at eleven-o-clock...
Loveliness!

Hope you're all having a wonderful Saturday and Winter Solstice!!!

Tree Time...

This is a different kind of tree year.
Firstly, we walked to get our tree. Which I found absolutely picturesque…
But the reality was this meant a cut tree which tore me up a bit.
It was a lovely tree lot though…
The air was chilly and damp, definitely boot weather...
Once the tree was inside, the whole room felt so nice.
I wish I could have ten living trees in my house so I could feel as if I lived in a Christmas-tree forest...
Decorating was easy work...
And Dextarr our cat loved the festivities...
What a nice afternoon and pleasant evening.

                                              Best Wishes to Everyone!

The past few weeks...

A lot fits into a few weeks...
Our house keeps progressing into a warmer, cozier home...
We worked hard and participated in a craft fair at the kids school...
 We've taken walks…
In new areas…
And found neat trails...
With neat trees...
And neat bike racks...
 We've made cards...
Filled with cursive writing, telling our friends how much we miss them...
And we've snuck away, to experience this fabulous, new city that we live in!!!

What have you been up to?

Snow in Portland…

Yesterday we woke up to this on the windshield...
I don't think it was actually snow, but they sure looked like snowflakes...
Perfect fairytale snowflakes...

Sunflower Seed Butter Cookies…

Today's been dark and rainy, definitely cookie baking weather. Since I can't eat peanut butter I am always trying other butter cookies. These came out particularly nicely; chewy, flavorful, a touch too sweet, but hey, they are cookies.

Sunflower Seed Butter Cookies:

 In a medium bowl mix:
1/2 cup butter soft
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 sunflower seed butter
2 eggs

Add:
1 + 3/4 cups unbleached flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Bake 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.

P.S. I didn't add it to mine, but I'm sure some sort of citrus zest would be wonderful!

                                                     Hope you all are well!!

Hello Sun...

I love when I can love the sun...
portland blog, sunny days in portland
When I woke up this morning and saw it peeking through the curtains, I knew it was worth getting up and getting out. The two little ones and I pack a simple breakfast into wax paper bags and headed for the park.
It was early and still cold, but the sun felt wonderful warming our faces.
When the sun is fleeting it becomes so appreciated and incredible.
Back in California we would dream of rain and hide from the sun. I like this switch of things.
The rain feels so healthy and fresh, I hope I never grow tired of it.
As to the sun, come visit again soon!

Settling In...

Days, and now a several weeks, have passed. I still haven't pulled out my camera. My phone does half versions of what I am imagining in my mind, but it is quick to grab and does a good bit of the trick...
We arrived with fall blasting all its colors…
I wish I had taken more time to stop and catch a few pictures...
Our house is becoming a home as we fill in this corner and that with bits and piece from our selves.
It takes a lot to make a house a home and I'm still shifting things around, unpacking boxes and trying to see what's needed. I love this, but my heart will always be bound to our house in California. I am trying to build my relationship to this new sister of a home. That's not to say I don't love it. It is a wonderful house, cozy and warm with character and depth. It's just that we put so much time, so much elbow grease as they say, to make our old place even livable. It was like raising a child. That home will always be my baby.
The dogs are adjusting…
On our first night here this big guy got stuck on the stairs. He was too terrified to come down...
The kids are adjusting too. They a so quick to find their corners, their favorite spots,
the places they make their own...
It's all very exciting. I'll get my camera out soon so I can get some good pictures of what it's like here...
