A weeks trip away… Maui... and it is better than I could have imagined...

I have never been on a real island, at least that I can think of… Maybe I have and it will come to me later, but as far as I can stretch my mind, I haven't
been on an island surrounded by sea water all on its own, defending itself from being
swallowed up by the billions of waves constantly crashing at its shores…
Well, now I have, and it was so unbelievably wonderful. Much more wonderful than
I would have imagined. My mom and I spent a perfect week, just the two of us visiting Maui…
I tried oysters for the first time... Somehow all the sea around made it seem most fitting.
I tasted the ocean stronger than ever before...
I played in they biggest waves I've ever been in. California has big waves, but nothing like this…
This picture doesn't do justice...
We saw humpback whales and snorkeled in a coral reef, a for-real coral reef!
We sat on rocky shores, the black jagged shapes so harsh and beautiful…
The most amazing though, was the road to Hana.
The winding, quite often one lane road that curled its way through Maui's jungle forests…
And by the way, one lane as in… ONE LANE!
We stopped and picnicked on the short wide wall of a moss covered bridge...
There were so many of these bridges we kept having to stop to take pictures. They were so magical...
As we ate, a jeep stopped, several people got out with flashlights and remarked that if they didn't come out in an hour to call for help. We asked where they were going and they said their was a hole beside the road that was a lava tunnle… We finished eating and decided to explore it a bit. It was pitch black immediately and we had no flash lights, but my camera's flash was a god send. We went a short bit making sure to keep the tunnel opening visible. I got a couple of good pictures before my camera died and we decided we best go out...
A couple hours later we paid to see a mile long lava tunnel.
We preferred the pint size one we explored alone.
The contrast of sky to foliage kept making me take my camera out...

On a different day we drove the north west shore. It was amazing as well and
when we stopped of to see an ocean blow hole we found an alien land…
This guy must have been king!
Spectacular...
It all took my breath and my heart away… I can't wait to go back and filter in the perfect air and wild fruit… Hawaii, the cliché that I now know could never be cliché, it was just truly wonderful!!!!

Nimble Fingers...

Not too long ago, one of our lovely little ladies in this group of
sweet children reached the ripe and exciting age of seven…
In preparation for a party that all these young ones were soon to be attending, they worked
quickly and nimbly to create a small presentable pile of gifts to show our truly deep
appreciation for her presence in our world…
 Using needle and thread…
Paper and pen…
Hot glue and wool roving...
Their complete focus on making something for their close companion was so very inspiring to me…

Cranberry Date Muffins...

Morning-time and fall weather is always a good muffin baking combination…
I had left over cranberries in the freezer and a box of dates on the shelf…
I wanted to make fluffy muffins that you might buy in a bakery or fancy store, so I whipped
the egg whites before adding them in once the rest of the batter was already mixed.
I have found this to be the secret to airier muffins… Here is this morning's doings:

Cranberry Date Muffins

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Mix in a large bowl:
3 egg yolks (save whites)
8 or so soft dates pitted and mashed up
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup grapeseed oil
zest from one lemon

In a separate bowl mix:
1+3/4 cup unbleached white flour
1+1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
pinch salt
Add:
1 cup frozen or fresh cranberries (not sauce.)

In yet another bowl whisk egg whites until stiff.

Mix first two bowls together until combined.
Gently add the egg whites one third at a time.

Pour into an oiled muffin pan. I used paper liners because I happened to have some,
but I still oiled the pan so the paper can come away from the muffin more easily.

Bake at 375 for about 25 minutes or until golden and puffed.

And the days are shorter...

Today was such a different feeling with the dark nightime so quickly arriving at 5:30…
I love when we get that extra hour to sleep in the morning, but it always feels so unexpected when suddenly it is dark before dinner is even ready. Part of me likes it, the rhythm of the day blends more with the odd schedules we humans tend to make for ourselves… I like the kids heading to bed and the night feeling deep and ready to rest in. It is too hard to make bedtimes when summer light is still dancing off the walls at 8:30 in the evening.
Tonight we built a fire outside and ate our dinner in the still warmish evening air…
We lit the jack'o lanterns and I felt Autumn's arrival…
Yes I know it happend quite a while back, but tonight it felt real…

Halloween...

Well Halloween has come again...
October has made its way round, and before I even fully saw its face,
it has already made plans to be on its way...
Pumpkins and squash have hit their peek, and now are resting until either, they will be consumed as food, carved into lanterns or perhaps just left to become compost that will help build the soil for plantings to come...
We made pumpkin doughnuts… the recipe of which is right here
The kids spent yesterday afternoon carving scary faces on their chosen pumpkins…
I think this might be the first year each of them could could actually carve their own pumpkin… Wow!)
And then there are these little guys, so oblivious of the haunting and sweets
gathering that is about to happen!!

                                                       Happy Halloween !!! ~  Marica

Getting back in the swing...

I ask myself this constantly… Where does time go???  Is it really, now, late October? The kids keep reminding me that there is just a short, short while before Halloween will be here, and hence, costumes will need to be finished. I say finished like I have already started… No no, they are still just a jumble of ideas… I think a lot of black cloth is involved though.

But for this moment, I just want to catch up...
Our year has begun...
 The work has started...
I look out my kitchen window to see this...
I spend a short bit of time at my living-room-table over seeing these squiggly lines becoming letters...
And notice how quickly they become so much more fluid and clear...
It's all coming together...
Our pattern is falling into place…
Or so I tell myself…

A picture's worth a thousand words, well…

Dreamy beach...
 Unbelievable tide pools...
 With real sea stars!!!!
 Yes, fat, thick-armed sea stars!!!
A hot day where we live, but just a short drive away...
 Mermaid-land...
 Beautiful rocky, sea-moss heaven...
 A place to be amazed...
 Over and over again….
 What an amazing afternoon...
 From start to finish…
 Really truly...
